Garrett Mitchell (baseball)
Garrett Mitchell (born September 4, 1998) is an American professional baseball outfielder in the Milwaukee Brewers organization. He was selected by the Brewers in the first round of the 2020 Major League Baseball draft.
Early life and amateur career[edit | edit source]
Mitchell was born in Orange, California. He attended Orange Lutheran High School in Orange, where he played high school baseball. During his high school career, he was highly regarded as a top prospect and committed to play college baseball at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
At UCLA, Mitchell played for the UCLA Bruins baseball team from 2018 to 2020. In his freshman year, he played in 44 games, batting .280 with one home run and 20 RBIs. In his sophomore year, he significantly improved, batting .349 with six home runs, 41 RBIs, and 18 stolen bases. His performance earned him a spot on the All-Pac-12 Conference team. Mitchell's junior season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but he still managed to impress scouts with his athleticism and hitting ability.
Professional career[edit | edit source]
Mitchell was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers with the 20th overall pick in the first round of the 2020 Major League Baseball draft. He signed with the Brewers and began his professional career in their minor league system.
In 2021, Mitchell made his professional debut with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, the Brewers' High-A affiliate. He quickly advanced to the Biloxi Shuckers, the Double-A affiliate, showcasing his speed, defensive skills, and hitting ability. Mitchell is considered one of the top prospects in the Brewers' organization and is expected to make his major league debut in the near future.
Personal life[edit | edit source]
Mitchell has Type 1 diabetes, a condition he was diagnosed with at a young age. Despite this, he has managed to excel in his baseball career and serves as an inspiration to other athletes with diabetes.
