George Franklin Fort
George Franklin Fort (May 1, 1809 – April 22, 1872) was an American physician, politician, and the 16th Governor of New Jersey. He served as governor from 1851 to 1854.

George Franklin Fort was born in Pemberton, New Jersey, on May 1, 1809. He pursued his early education in local schools and later attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied medicine. After completing his medical degree, Fort began practicing as a physician in New Jersey.
Medical Career[edit | edit source]
Fort established a successful medical practice in New Jersey, gaining a reputation as a skilled and compassionate physician. His medical career provided him with a strong foundation in public service and community involvement.
Political Career[edit | edit source]
Fort's interest in politics led him to join the Democratic Party. He was elected to the New Jersey General Assembly in 1844 and served until 1847. During his tenure, he was known for his advocacy on behalf of public health and education.
In 1850, Fort was elected as the 16th Governor of New Jersey. His term as governor lasted from 1851 to 1854. As governor, Fort focused on issues such as infrastructure development, public health, and education reform. He was instrumental in the establishment of several public institutions and worked to improve the state's transportation network.
Later Life and Legacy[edit | edit source]
After serving as governor, Fort returned to his medical practice. He continued to be active in public affairs and contributed to various civic and charitable organizations. George Franklin Fort passed away on April 22, 1872, in New Egypt, New Jersey.
