George Hewston
George Hewston (September 11, 1826 – September 4, 1891) was an American physician and politician who served as the 19th Mayor of San Francisco from 1875 to 1876. He was a member of the Democratic Party.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
George Hewston was born on September 11, 1826, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He pursued his education in medicine and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1850. After completing his medical degree, Hewston practiced medicine in Philadelphia before moving to California during the California Gold Rush.
Medical Career[edit | edit source]
Upon arriving in California, Hewston continued his medical practice in San Francisco. He became a well-respected physician in the community and was known for his contributions to public health and medical education. Hewston was also involved in the establishment of several medical institutions in San Francisco.
Political Career[edit | edit source]
Hewston's involvement in politics began with his election to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. His reputation as a dedicated public servant led to his appointment as Mayor of San Francisco in 1875, following the resignation of James Otis. During his tenure as mayor, Hewston focused on improving public health and sanitation in the city.
Later Life and Death[edit | edit source]
After serving as mayor, Hewston returned to his medical practice. He remained active in the medical community and continued to contribute to public health initiatives. George Hewston passed away on September 4, 1891, in San Francisco.
