George Mason University (GMU, Mason) is a public research university located in Fairfax, Virginia. It was established in 1957 as a branch of the University of Virginia and became an independent institution in 1972. The university is named after George Mason, a Founding Father known for his contributions to the United States Bill of Rights.

George Mason University was founded in 1957 as the Northern Virginia University Center of the University of Virginia. In 1972, it became an independent institution and was named after George Mason, a Virginia planter and politician who was instrumental in drafting the Virginia Declaration of Rights, which later influenced the United States Bill of Rights.
Campuses[edit | edit source]
GMU has multiple campuses, including the main campus in Fairfax, and additional campuses in Arlington, Prince William, and Songdo, South Korea. Each campus specializes in different academic disciplines and research areas.
