Gerontology Research Group
Gerontology Research Group (GRG) is an organization dedicated to the research and study of aging and longevity. Founded in 1990 by L. Stephen Coles and Steven M. Kaye, the GRG focuses on documenting supercentenarians (people who have reached the age of 110 years or more) and validating their ages. The group's work contributes significantly to the field of gerontology, the study of the social, psychological, cognitive, and biological aspects of aging.
History[edit | edit source]
The Gerontology Research Group was established with the aim of creating a comprehensive database of supercentenarians and to support research into the factors that contribute to extreme human longevity. Over the years, the GRG has become a leading authority in the verification of supercentenarian ages, working closely with other organizations and researchers in the field of aging.
Objectives[edit | edit source]
The primary objectives of the GRG include:
- Documenting and verifying the ages of supercentenarians worldwide.
- Conducting and supporting research on aging and longevity.
- Providing a forum for scientists, researchers, and enthusiasts to share information and collaborate on gerontology-related projects.
Research and Contributions[edit | edit source]
The GRG has made significant contributions to the field of gerontology, particularly in the area of age verification. The group's rigorous verification process has helped ensure the accuracy of supercentenarian records, which is crucial for research on aging and longevity. Additionally, the GRG has been involved in various research projects aimed at understanding the genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that contribute to long life.
Membership and Collaboration[edit | edit source]
Membership in the Gerontology Research Group is open to researchers, scientists, and anyone with an interest in the study of aging and longevity. The GRG collaborates with various organizations, including the International Database on Longevity and the New England Centenarian Study, to further its research objectives.
Impact[edit | edit source]
The work of the Gerontology Research Group has had a profound impact on the field of gerontology. By providing accurate and verified data on supercentenarians, the GRG has contributed to a better understanding of the factors that contribute to extreme longevity. This, in turn, has implications for studies on aging, health, and the potential for extending human life span.
