It was founded in 1852 by Domenico Ghirardelli, an Italian chocolatier, and is one of the oldest chocolate companies in the United States. The company is a subsidiary of the Swiss confectionery company Lindt & Sprüngli.

Domenico Ghirardelli was born in Rapallo, Italy, and apprenticed as a confectioner in Genoa. In 1849, he moved to California during the California Gold Rush and opened a store in San Francisco. By 1852, he had established the Ghirardelli Chocolate Company, which quickly gained a reputation for high-quality chocolate.
