Domenico Ghirardelli was born in Rapallo, Italy, and moved to Uruguay and then Peru to work in the confectionery business. In 1849, he moved to California during the California Gold Rush and opened a store in San Francisco. The company was officially founded in 1852 and quickly became known for its high-quality chocolate.

Ghirardelli Square[edit | edit source]
Ghirardelli Square in San Francisco is a popular tourist destination and a historic landmark. It was the original site of the Ghirardelli chocolate factory and now houses shops, restaurants, and the Ghirardelli Chocolate Experience store.
