Gioachino Rossini
Gioachino Rossini (29 February 1792 – 13 November 1868) was an Italian composer who gained fame for his 39 operas, although he also wrote many songs, some chamber music, and some sacred music. He was known for his melodic inventiveness, his harmonic language, and his ability to write music that matched the human voice.
Early life[edit | edit source]
Rossini was born in Pesaro, a town on the Adriatic Sea coast of Italy. His father, Giuseppe, was a horn player and his mother, Anna, was a singer. Rossini began his musical studies at the age of 14 in Bologna, with the support of a wealthy sponsor.
Career[edit | edit source]
Rossini's first opera, La cambiale di matrimonio (The Marriage Contract), was produced in Venice when he was 18 years old. His most famous operas include The Barber of Seville, La Cenerentola (Cinderella), and William Tell. Rossini retired from composing operas in 1829, at the age of 37, but he continued to write sacred music, songs, and chamber music.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Rossini's influence on the development of opera was significant. He was a master of the bel canto style, and his works were known for their memorable melodies and their dramatic effectiveness. His operas were performed throughout Europe and in the United States during his lifetime, and they continue to be performed today.
Personal life[edit | edit source]
Rossini was known for his love of food, and several dishes are named after him, including the famous Tournedos Rossini, a French steak dish.
Death[edit | edit source]
Rossini died in Paris, France, in 1868. He was buried in the Père Lachaise Cemetery, but his remains were later moved to the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence, Italy.
