Gir Kesar
Gir Kesar is a variety of mango that is cultivated in the Girnar hills of Gujarat, India. It is also known as Kesar due to its saffron skin tone and is one of the most expensive varieties of mangoes in the world.
History[edit | edit source]
The Gir Kesar mango was first grown in 1931 by Junagadh Wazir Sale Bhai in Vanthali. The mango is known to have a unique sweet taste and is globally recognized for its high nutritional value.
Cultivation[edit | edit source]
Gir Kesar mangoes are primarily grown in the districts of Junagadh and Amreli in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat. The mangoes are harvested during the months of June and July. The unique geographical and climatic conditions of the Girnar hills contribute to the distinctive flavor and aroma of the Gir Kesar mango.
Recognition[edit | edit source]
In 2011, the Gir Kesar mango received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, making it the first agricultural product from Gujarat to receive this recognition. The GI tag has helped in promoting the brand of Gir Kesar mangoes in national and international markets.
Nutritional Value[edit | edit source]
Gir Kesar mangoes are rich in Vitamin A and Vitamin C, which are essential for maintaining good health. They also contain significant amounts of Dietary fiber, Vitamin B6, and other important nutrients.
Uses[edit | edit source]
Apart from being consumed as a fruit, Gir Kesar mangoes are also used in the preparation of various food products such as mango pulp, mango juice, mango pickle, and mango ice cream.
