Glenora Distillers
Glenora Distillers is a Canadian distillery located in Glenville, Nova Scotia. It is renowned for producing single malt whisky and is notable for being the first distillery in North America to produce a single malt whisky, which it markets under the brand name Glen Breton Rare.
History[edit | edit source]
Glenora Distillers was founded in 1989 by Bruce Jardine, a local entrepreneur who saw the potential for producing high-quality whisky in the region. The distillery was built in the traditional Scottish style, with copper pot stills and wooden washbacks, to ensure the authenticity of its single malt whisky.
Production[edit | edit source]
The production process at Glenora Distillers follows traditional Scottish methods. The distillery uses pure water sourced from MacLellan's Brook, which flows through the property. The malted barley is imported from Scotland, and the whisky is aged in oak barrels for a minimum of three years, although some expressions are aged for much longer.
Products[edit | edit source]
Glenora Distillers is best known for its Glen Breton Rare single malt whisky. The distillery offers several expressions of Glen Breton Rare, including:
- Glen Breton Rare 10 Year Old
- Glen Breton Rare 14 Year Old
- Glen Breton Rare 19 Year Old
- Glen Breton Ice, which is finished in ice wine barrels
Legal Disputes[edit | edit source]
Glenora Distillers has been involved in legal disputes over the use of the name "Glen Breton." The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) argued that the use of "Glen" in the name could mislead consumers into thinking the whisky was produced in Scotland. However, in 2009, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled in favor of Glenora Distillers, allowing them to continue using the name.
Visitor Experience[edit | edit source]
The distillery offers tours and tastings to visitors, providing an opportunity to learn about the whisky-making process and sample the various expressions of Glen Breton Rare. The site also features a gift shop and a pub where visitors can enjoy local cuisine and beverages.
