The Government Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine is a state-owned hospital located in K. K. Nagar, Chennai, India. It was founded in 1979 and is funded and managed by the state government of Tamil Nadu. The hospital is affiliated with the Directorate of Medical Education and is the only government-run center that specializes in making prosthetic limbs.
History[edit | edit source]
In the late 1960s, Tamil Nadu became the first state in India to offer a three-year diploma course in orthotics and prosthetics. The course was conducted by the orthopedics department of Madras Medical College, which is attached to the Government General Hospital. In 1979, the Government Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine was established to train students in developing prostheses. The institute is known for developing the Madras Foot, a design that later influenced the creation of the Jaipur foot.
The Hospital Today[edit | edit source]
As of 2013, the Government Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine has faced challenges and has been understaffed. The institute currently has only 12 workers, with 64 positions remaining vacant due to retirements that were not filled. Despite these challenges, the hospital continues to provide rehabilitation services to patients in need.
