The grain is a unit of mass that is based on the mass of a single seed of a cereal grain, such as wheat or barley. It is a part of the imperial and US customary systems of measurement. The grain is the only unit that is the same in both the avoirdupois, troy, and apothecaries' systems.

History[edit | edit source]

The grain was originally based on the weight of a single grain of barley, considered equivalent to 1/7000 of a pound. This definition has been standardized over time, and the grain is now defined as exactly 64.79891 milligrams in the SI.

Usage[edit | edit source]

The grain is commonly used in the measurement of gunpowder, bullets, and archery equipment. It is also used in medicine to measure the mass of pharmaceuticals and precious metals.

In pharmacy, the grain was historically used in the apothecaries' system to measure medications. Although the use of grains in pharmacy has largely been replaced by the metric system, it is still occasionally used in the United States.
