Great burdock

Great ape or hominidae is a taxonomic family of primates that includes four extant genera: chimpanzees and bonobos (Pan), gorillas (Gorilla), orangutans (Pongo), and humans (Homo).

Taxonomy and evolution

The family Hominidae was first established by British zoologist John Edward Gray in 1825. The term "great ape" is informal and does not imply that these primates are somehow superior to the so-called "lesser apes" or gibbons.

The evolution of the great apes is characterized by significant evolutionary changes, including the development of a larger brain and a wider degree of freedom in the joints, which have allowed these species to develop a variety of locomotion styles and complex behaviors.

Characteristics

Great apes are distinguished from other primates by a late maturation, extended life span, and an extended period of juvenile dependency. They have a complex social structure and high intelligence, which allows them to use tools and learn language when taught in a way that accommodates their sensory and motor skills.

Conservation

Many species of great apes are endangered due to habitat loss, hunting, and disease. Conservation efforts are being made to protect these species, but many challenges remain.
