Greater Antilles
Greater Antilles is a grouping of the larger islands in the Caribbean Sea, including Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola (comprising Haiti and the Dominican Republic), and Puerto Rico. Together with the Lesser Antilles, they make up the Antilles, which are part of the larger West Indies group of islands.
Geography[edit | edit source]
The Greater Antilles are made up of continental rock, a part of North America. The islands have a diverse range of landscapes, from the mountainous regions of Cuba and Hispaniola to the flatlands of Jamaica and Puerto Rico. The region is known for its tropical climate and rich biodiversity.
Flora and Fauna[edit | edit source]
The Greater Antilles are home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including many endemic species. The islands are part of the Neotropic ecozone, which includes South and Central America, the Mexican lowlands, the Caribbean islands, and southern Florida.
Healthcare[edit | edit source]
Healthcare systems in the Greater Antilles vary greatly. Cuba, for example, is known for its high-quality healthcare system and medical research, while Haiti's healthcare system has struggled due to political instability and lack of resources.
Culture[edit | edit source]
The Greater Antilles have a rich cultural history, influenced by indigenous peoples, European colonizers, African slaves, and more recent immigrants. The islands are known for their music, dance, and cuisine, which reflect this diverse cultural heritage.
Economy[edit | edit source]
The economy of the Greater Antilles is diverse, with major industries including tourism, agriculture, mining, and manufacturing. However, economic development varies greatly among the islands, with Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic having the largest economies.
