Lesser Antilles

The Lesser Antilles is a group of islands in the Caribbean Sea. They are part of the West Indies and are divided into two groups: the Windward Islands and the Leeward Islands. The Lesser Antilles are rich in biodiversity and have a significant impact on global climate patterns.

Geography[edit | edit source]

The Lesser Antilles are located in the southeastern Caribbean Sea. They extend from the Virgin Islands in the north to the coast of Venezuela in the south. The islands are generally volcanic in origin, with some having active volcanoes such as Mount Pelee on Martinique and La Soufriere on Saint Vincent.

Biodiversity[edit | edit source]

The Lesser Antilles are home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. The islands are part of the Caribbean biodiversity hotspot, one of the world's 36 biodiversity hotspots. They are home to many endemic species, including the Saint Lucia parrot and the Barbados green monkey.

Climate[edit | edit source]

The climate of the Lesser Antilles is tropical, with high temperatures and humidity year-round. The islands are located in the path of the Atlantic hurricane belt, making them susceptible to hurricanes during the hurricane season from June to November.

Health and Medicine[edit | edit source]

Healthcare in the Lesser Antilles varies from island to island. Some islands, like Barbados, have well-developed healthcare systems, while others, like Dominica, have less developed systems. Common health issues in the region include dengue fever, Zika virus, and HIV/AIDS.
