Grenache Noir

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Grenache Noir is a red wine grape variety that is one of the most widely planted grape varieties in the world. It is particularly associated with the wine regions of Spain, where it is known as Garnacha, and the Rhone Valley in France.

History[edit | edit source]

The origins of Grenache Noir are believed to be in Spain, specifically in the region of Aragon. From there, it spread across the Mediterranean to France and Italy. The grape variety is thought to have arrived in France in the 14th century during the period of the Papal Schism, when the Pope resided in Avignon.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

Grenache Noir is a late-ripening grape that requires a warm climate to fully mature. It is resistant to wind and drought, making it well-suited to the arid conditions of Spain and the Southern Rhone Valley. The grape produces wines that are high in alcohol and sugar, with a spicy, berry-flavored profile and soft tannins.

Wine Production[edit | edit source]

In Spain, Grenache Noir is used in the production of a variety of wines, including the robust, red wines of Priorat, and the sweet, fortified wines of Banyuls. In the Rhone Valley, it is the primary grape in the famous Chateauneuf-du-Pape blend.

Viticulture[edit | edit source]

Grenache Noir is a vigorous vine that can produce high yields if not carefully managed. It is susceptible to a number of diseases, including botrytis cinerea and coulure, which can affect the quality and quantity of the harvest.

Synonyms[edit | edit source]

Grenache Noir is known by a number of different names around the world, including Garnacha in Spain, Cannonau in Sardinia, and Alicante in France.
