Gulkana
Gulkana is a census-designated place (CDP) located in the Valdez-Cordova Census Area, in the state of Alaska, United States. It is situated near the confluence of the Gulkana River and the Copper River. The area is known for its scenic beauty and outdoor recreational opportunities.

The name "Gulkana" is derived from the Ahtna word "Ggulkana," which means "many fish." The area has been traditionally inhabited by the Ahtna people, an Alaska Native group. The establishment of the Gulkana Airport in the mid-20th century contributed to the development of the community.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Gulkana is located at coordinates 62°16′N 145°27′W. The total area of the CDP is approximately 12.7 square miles, of which 12.5 square miles is land and 0.2 square miles is water. The region is characterized by its rugged terrain, rivers, and proximity to the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve.

As of the 2020 Census, Gulkana had a population of 119 people. The population density is low, with vast areas of wilderness surrounding the community. The residents are predominantly of Ahtna descent, and the community maintains a strong cultural heritage.

The economy of Gulkana is primarily based on subsistence activities, including fishing, hunting, and gathering. Tourism also plays a significant role, with visitors attracted to the area's natural beauty and opportunities for outdoor activities such as fishing, hiking, and rafting.
