Höxter (district)

Höxter is a district in the east of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Neighboring districts are Holzminden, Northeim, Kassel, Waldeck-Frankenberg, Hochsauerland, Paderborn, and Lippe.

The district was created in 1816 when the new Prussian province of Westphalia was established. It has remained in its present form, with only minor changes, since then.

Geography[edit | edit source]

The district covers the eastern part of the Teutoburg Forest, which also contains the highest elevation of the district, the Köterberg at 496 meters. The Weser river runs through the district from south to north. The highest elevation is the Köterberg (496 m), located in the Lügde municipality.

Coat of arms[edit | edit source]

The coat of arms of Höxter combines two symbols related to the history of the district. The cross in the left half is the symbol of the bishopric of Paderborn, while the nettle leaf in the right half is the symbol of the Counts of Schwalenberg-Nettle, who ruled most of the district until the 13th century.

Towns and municipalities[edit | edit source]

The district of Höxter consists of ten municipalities, all of which have city status. These are Bad Driburg, Beverungen, Borgentreich, Brakel, Höxter, Marienmünster, Nieheim, Steinheim, Warburg, and Willebadessen.

Economy[edit | edit source]

The economy of the Höxter district is characterized by small and medium-sized businesses. Key sectors include the food industry, the wood and furniture industry, and the metalworking industry. The district is also known for its high-quality agricultural products, particularly in the areas of grain and meat production.

Culture[edit | edit source]

The district is known for its rich cultural heritage, including numerous historic buildings such as the Corvey Abbey and the Weser Renaissance style buildings. It is also home to several annual festivals and events, such as the Warburg Diocesan Shooting Festival and the Nieheim Cheese Market.

Education[edit | edit source]

The district offers a wide range of educational opportunities, with numerous primary and secondary schools, as well as vocational schools. The district is also home to the Höxter Campus of the University of Applied Sciences OWL, which offers a variety of study programs.
