HHEX
HHEX or Hematopoietically-expressed homeobox is a protein that in humans is encoded by the HHEX gene. This protein is a member of the homeobox family of genes, which play a crucial role in cell differentiation and morphogenesis.

The HHEX protein is a transcription factor, meaning it helps regulate the activity of certain genes. It is involved in the development of the liver, thyroid, and pancreas during embryogenesis. It is also essential for the formation of the portal vein, which carries blood from the gastrointestinal tract to the liver.

Mutations in the HHEX gene have been associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. This is likely due to the protein's role in the development of the pancreas, which produces insulin, a hormone that regulates blood sugar levels.
