HLA-B*82

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

HLA-B*82 is a specific allele group of the HLA-B gene, which is part of the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) system. The HLA system is a group of genes that are crucial for the function of the immune system, specifically in the recognition and response to foreign substances.

Function[edit | edit source]

The HLA-B gene encodes a cell surface protein that plays a key role in the immune system's response to foreign substances. The protein is found on the surface of almost all cells in the body and is responsible for presenting peptides (small pieces of proteins) from inside the cell to the immune system. This allows the immune system to recognize and respond to foreign substances, such as viruses and bacteria.

The HLA-B*82 allele group is one of many possible versions of the HLA-B gene. Each allele group is associated with a specific set of peptides that it can present to the immune system. This means that individuals with the HLA-B*82 allele group may have a different immune response to certain substances compared to individuals with other HLA-B allele groups.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

The HLA-B*82 allele group has been associated with a number of medical conditions. For example, it has been linked to a higher risk of certain autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. It has also been associated with a higher risk of certain infections, such as hepatitis C.

In addition, the HLA-B*82 allele group has been implicated in drug hypersensitivity reactions. For example, individuals with this allele group may be at a higher risk of developing a severe skin reaction known as Stevens-Johnson syndrome when taking certain medications.
