HLA-Cw7
HLA-Cw7 is a human leukocyte antigen (HLA) allele, part of the HLA-C gene complex. It is one of the many variants of the HLA-C gene, which plays a crucial role in the immune system's response to foreign substances.
Function[edit | edit source]
The HLA-Cw7 allele, like other HLA-C alleles, encodes a protein that is expressed on the surface of cells. This protein presents peptides (small pieces of proteins) to T cells, a type of white blood cell. The T cells then determine whether the peptides are from the body's own proteins or from foreign substances, such as viruses or bacteria. If the peptides are foreign, the T cells initiate an immune response.
Association with Disease[edit | edit source]
HLA-Cw7 has been associated with a number of diseases. For example, it has been linked to an increased risk of psoriasis, a chronic skin condition. It has also been associated with a higher risk of HIV progression.
Genotyping[edit | edit source]
Genotyping for HLA-Cw7 is typically done using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques. This involves amplifying the DNA region of interest and then using specific probes to detect the presence of the HLA-Cw7 allele.
