HMAS Swan

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

HMAS Swan was a River-class torpedo-boat destroyer of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). Named for the Swan River, Swan was built at the Cockatoo Island Dockyard and was commissioned into the RAN in 1916. She was one of six River-class vessels built for the RAN.

Design and Construction[edit | edit source]

Swan was designed as a River-class torpedo-boat destroyer, a class of naval vessel designed for high speed and agility. She was built at the Cockatoo Island Dockyard in Sydney, Australia. Her construction began in 1913 and she was launched in 1915. Swan was commissioned into the RAN in 1916.

Service History[edit | edit source]

During World War I, Swan was initially used for patrol duties in Australian waters. In 1917, she was deployed to the Mediterranean Sea, where she performed escort and patrol duties. After the war, Swan returned to Australia and was decommissioned in 1928.

Post-Service History[edit | edit source]

After her decommissioning, Swan was stripped of her armaments and sold for scrap in 1930. Her hull was scuttled off Sydney in 1931.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Swan's name was later used for two other ships in the RAN: HMAS Swan (U74), a Grimsby-class sloop launched in 1936, and HMAS Swan (DE 50), a River-class destroyer escort launched in 1967.
