Halifax County, Virginia is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 33,911. The county seat is Halifax.

History[edit | edit source]

Halifax County was established in 1752 from Lunenburg County. It was named for George Montagu-Dunk, 2nd Earl of Halifax, who was the President of the Board of Trade. The county has a rich history, including significant involvement in the American Revolutionary War and the American Civil War.

Geography[edit | edit source]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 830 square miles (2,100 km²), of which 818 square miles (2,120 km²) is land and 12 square miles (31 km²) (1.4%) is water. The county is located in the southern part of the state, bordering North Carolina.

As of the census of 2020, there were 33,911 people, 14,129 households, and 9,234 families residing in the county. The population density was 41 people per square mile (16/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 60.5% White, 36.2% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.4% Asian, and 2.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.

The economy of Halifax County is diverse, with significant contributions from agriculture, manufacturing, and retail. The county is known for its tobacco production, as well as other crops such as soybeans and corn. Manufacturing includes textiles, furniture, and automotive parts.

Halifax County is served by the Halifax County Public Schools system, which includes several elementary schools, a middle school, and Halifax County High School. The county is also home to the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center, which offers various educational programs and workforce training.

Major highways in Halifax County include U.S. Route 58, U.S. Route 360, and U.S. Route 501. The county is also served by the Danville Regional Airport and the Raleigh-Durham International Airport in nearby North Carolina.
