Haliotis laevigata, commonly known as the Greenlip Abalone, is a species of abalone, a type of marine gastropod mollusk in the family Haliotidae, the abalones. This species is native to the waters of Australia and New Zealand, where it is a highly prized seafood delicacy.

The Greenlip Abalone is a large, ear-shaped shellfish with a row of respiratory pores along the outer edge of the shell. The shell is typically greenish in color, hence the common name. The interior of the shell is iridescent and often used in jewelry making.

Distribution and Habitat[edit | edit source]

The Greenlip Abalone is found in the coastal waters of southern Australia and New Zealand. It prefers rocky substrates and can be found at depths of up to 40 meters.

The diet of the Greenlip Abalone consists primarily of seaweed and other marine algae.

Commercial Use[edit | edit source]

The Greenlip Abalone is commercially harvested for its meat, which is considered a delicacy in many cultures, particularly in Asia. The shells are also collected for their ornamental value.

The Greenlip Abalone is not currently listed as threatened or endangered. However, overfishing and illegal harvesting have led to population declines in some areas.
