Hamedan

Hamedan (also spelled Hamadan) is the capital city of Hamedan Province, Iran. It is one of the oldest cities in Iran and the world. Hamedan has a population of approximately 473,149 people.

Hamedan is believed to be among the oldest Iranian cities. It is possible that it was occupied by the Assyrians in 1100 BCE; the Ancient Greek historian, Herodotus, states that it was the capital of the Medes, around 700 BCE.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Hamedan is located at an elevation of 1,850 meters above sea level. The city lies on the Silk Road, an ancient trade route that connected China with the West, and has long been a center of trade and commerce.

Climate[edit | edit source]

Hamedan has a cold semi-arid climate. Summers are mild to warm and winters are cold and snowy.

Economy[edit | edit source]

The economy of Hamedan is based on agriculture, particularly the production of grain and fruit. The city is also known for its carpets and ceramics.

Culture[edit | edit source]

Hamedan is home to several historical and cultural sites, including the Ganj Nameh, an ancient inscription, and the Tomb of Esther and Mordechai, which is considered by some to be the most important Jewish pilgrimage site in Iran.

Education[edit | edit source]

Hamedan is home to several universities and institutions of higher education, including Hamedan University of Medical Sciences and Bu-Ali Sina University.
