Hannah Chaplin (6 August 1865 – 28 August 1928) was an English stage performer and the mother of Charlie Chaplin, one of the most famous actors and filmmakers of the silent film era. She was born as Hannah Harriet Pedlingham Hill in Wolverhampton, England.

Hannah Chaplin was born into a poor family and had a difficult childhood. She began her career in the entertainment industry at a young age, performing in music halls and theaters. Her stage name was Lily Harley, and she was known for her singing and dancing abilities.

Marriage and Family[edit | edit source]

Hannah married Charles Chaplin Sr., a singer and actor, in 1885. The couple had two sons, Charlie Chaplin and Sydney Chaplin. The marriage was troubled, and Charles Sr. left the family when Charlie was very young. Hannah struggled to support her children, often facing financial difficulties.

Health Issues[edit | edit source]

Hannah Chaplin suffered from mental health issues, which worsened over time. She was eventually committed to Cane Hill Asylum in London, where she spent much of her later life. Her mental health struggles had a profound impact on her son Charlie, who later depicted similar themes in his films.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Despite her struggles, Hannah Chaplin's influence on her son Charlie was significant. He often credited her with inspiring his love for the stage and his understanding of the human condition. Charlie Chaplin's portrayal of the Tramp character was partly inspired by his mother's experiences and the hardships she faced.

Death[edit | edit source]

Hannah Chaplin died on 28 August 1928 in Hollywood, California, where she had been living with her son Charlie. She was buried in Hollywood Forever Cemetery.
