Harold A. Furlong
Harold A. Furlong (April 4, 1895 – July 27, 1987) was a highly decorated officer in the United States Army during World War I. He received the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Harold Arthur Furlong was born on April 4, 1895, in Detroit, Michigan. He attended the University of Michigan, where he studied medicine and graduated with a degree in 1917.
Military Service[edit | edit source]
Furlong enlisted in the United States Army in 1917, shortly after the United States entered World War I. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and assigned to the 353rd Infantry Regiment, part of the 89th Division.
Meuse-Argonne Offensive[edit | edit source]
During the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in October 1918, Furlong displayed extraordinary heroism. On October 31, 1918, near Bantheville, France, he led his platoon in an attack against a strongly fortified enemy position. Despite being wounded, he continued to lead his men until the objective was secured. For his actions, he was awarded the Medal of Honor.

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty in action with the enemy near Bantheville, France, on October 31, 1918.
Post-War Life[edit | edit source]
After the war, Furlong returned to the United States and resumed his medical career. He became a prominent physician in Michigan and was active in various veterans' organizations. He passed away on July 27, 1987, and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
