Harry's Cafe de Wheels
Harry's Cafe de Wheels is a prominent food truck chain in Sydney, Australia, known for its iconic pie carts. The chain was established in 1945 by Harry "Tiger" Edwards and has since become a popular destination for late-night dining, attracting both locals and tourists.
History[edit | edit source]
Harry "Tiger" Edwards founded Harry's Cafe de Wheels in 1945, shortly after the end of World War II. The original location was in Woolloomooloo, near the naval dockyard. The name "Cafe de Wheels" came about because the city council required mobile food vendors to move at least 12 inches a day. To comply with this rule, Edwards added wheels to his cafe.
Over the years, Harry's Cafe de Wheels has become a Sydney institution, known for its high-quality meat pies, hot dogs, and pasties. The chain has also been visited by numerous celebrities, including Elton John, Russell Crowe, and Anthony Bourdain.
Menu[edit | edit source]
The menu at Harry's Cafe de Wheels features a variety of traditional Australian dishes. The most famous item is the "Tiger Pie", a meat pie topped with mashed potatoes, mushy peas, and gravy. Other popular items include the hot dog de wheels, the chicken pie, and the seafood pie.
Locations[edit | edit source]
In addition to the original Woolloomooloo location, there are now several Harry's Cafe de Wheels locations throughout Sydney, including in Haymarket, Newcastle, and Liverpool. There are also international locations in South Korea and the Philippines.
In popular culture[edit | edit source]
Harry's Cafe de Wheels has been featured in numerous films and television shows, including Mission: Impossible 2 and The Bachelor Australia. It has also been mentioned in several songs, such as Cold Chisel's "Breakfast at Sweethearts".
