Health Management Associates was a for-profit corporation that operated hospitals and other healthcare facilities in the southern United States. It was headquartered in North Naples, Florida.

Background[edit | edit source]

Health Management Associates (HMA) provided hospitals and physician practices with people, processes, capital, and subject matter expertise based on their individual needs or governing requirements. HMA also invested capital for hospital facility renewal, recruited physicians to expand community resources or hospital services, and promoted the use of standardized best practices throughout its facilities.

In 2010, HMA purchased the former Wuesthoff Healthcare hospitals in Rockledge, Florida for $145 million.

In 2013, Community Health Systems entered into an agreement to acquire HMA for about $3.6 billion in cash and stock. This merger made Community Health Systems the largest for-profit hospital operator in the United States.

Before its acquisition in 2014, HMA provided services to 71 hospitals with approximately 11,000 licensed beds across 15 states. With 42,000 individuals in clinical and support roles, HMA facilitated 3.5 million patient interactions annually.
