Heinz 57
Heinz 57 is a brand of sauce and ketchup produced by the H.J. Heinz Company, now part of Kraft Heinz. The term "Heinz 57" refers to a slogan "57 Varieties" which was introduced by the company's founder, Henry J. Heinz, in 1896. Despite the slogan, the company offers far more than 57 products. Heinz 57 sauce is a unique blend of tomato puree, malt vinegar, and a secret mix of spices and flavorings. It is often used as a condiment for steak, chicken, and other meat dishes.
History[edit | edit source]
The H.J. Heinz Company was founded in 1869 in Sharpsburg, Pennsylvania by Henry J. Heinz. The company initially started by selling horseradish, pickles, vinegar, and sauerkraut. In 1896, Heinz was inspired by an advertisement he saw for "21 styles of shoes" and decided to adopt the slogan "57 Varieties" for his company, despite the fact that they were already manufacturing more than 60 products at the time. The number 57 was chosen because Heinz thought it was a lucky number. This marketing strategy helped to establish Heinz as a household name.
Heinz 57 Sauce[edit | edit source]
Introduced in 1911, Heinz 57 sauce was marketed as a steak sauce but has since been used on a variety of foods. Its tangy flavor, derived from a blend of spices and vinegar, makes it versatile for cooking, marinating, and as a dipping sauce. The exact recipe is a closely guarded secret, known only to a few people within the company.
Product Range[edit | edit source]
Over the years, the Heinz company has expanded its product line significantly beyond the original 57 varieties. Today, it includes a wide range of food products, including ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, vinegar, baby food, and more. The brand is recognized globally for its quality and innovation in food products.
Cultural Impact[edit | edit source]
The phrase "Heinz 57" has entered the American lexicon, often used to describe a mixed breed of dog, indicating a dog of many mixes, similar to the variety of products offered by Heinz. The brand itself has become synonymous with ketchup in many parts of the world, illustrating its significant impact on food culture.
