Heinz Burt

Heinz Burt (24 July 1942 – 7 April 2000), known professionally as Heinz, was a German-born British rock and roll bassist and singer who performed with The Tornados. He is best known for his work with producer Joe Meek and for his solo hit "Just Like Eddie".

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Heinz Burt was born in Detmold, Germany, and moved to the United Kingdom with his family in the 1950s. He grew up in Eastleigh, Hampshire, where he developed an interest in music.

Career[edit | edit source]

The Tornados[edit | edit source]

Heinz joined The Tornados in 1961 as their bassist. The band was produced by Joe Meek and became famous for their instrumental hit "Telstar", which was the first single by a British band to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States.

Solo Career[edit | edit source]

Encouraged by Joe Meek, Heinz embarked on a solo career in 1963. His debut single, "Just Like Eddie", was a tribute to Eddie Cochran and became a hit, reaching number 5 on the UK Singles Chart. Despite this success, Heinz struggled to maintain his solo career and did not achieve the same level of fame as he had with The Tornados.

Later Years[edit | edit source]

In the later years of his life, Heinz continued to perform occasionally and made appearances at various rock and roll revival shows. He also worked in various non-musical jobs to support himself.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Heinz was known for his distinctive blonde hair, which was dyed by Joe Meek to make him stand out. He faced several personal challenges, including financial difficulties and health issues. Heinz passed away on 7 April 2000 in Southampton, Hampshire, from motor neurone disease.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Heinz Burt remains a notable figure in the history of British rock and roll, particularly for his association with Joe Meek and his contribution to the success of The Tornados. His solo hit "Just Like Eddie" is still remembered as a classic tribute to Eddie Cochran.
