Helper/Suppressor Ratio

The Helper/Suppressor Ratio is a measure used in immunology to determine the balance between T helper cells and T suppressor cells in the human immune system. This ratio is often used as an indicator of immune system health and can be affected by various conditions, including HIV/AIDS, cancer, and autoimmune diseases.

Overview[edit | edit source]

T cells are a type of white blood cell that play a crucial role in the immune response. There are several types of T cells, including T helper cells and T suppressor cells. T helper cells stimulate the immune response, while T suppressor cells inhibit it. The balance between these two types of cells is important for maintaining a healthy immune system.

The Helper/Suppressor Ratio is calculated by dividing the number of T helper cells by the number of T suppressor cells. A normal ratio is typically between 1.0 and 2.0. A ratio below 1.0 indicates an overactive immune response, which can lead to autoimmune diseases. A ratio above 2.0 indicates an underactive immune response, which can leave the body vulnerable to infections and diseases.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

The Helper/Suppressor Ratio is often used in the diagnosis and monitoring of various health conditions. For example, in patients with HIV/AIDS, the ratio is typically low due to a decrease in the number of T helper cells. This can lead to an overactive immune response and the development of opportunistic infections.

In cancer patients, the Helper/Suppressor Ratio can be elevated due to an increase in the number of T suppressor cells. This can suppress the immune response and allow the cancer to progress.

In autoimmune diseases, the ratio can be either high or low, depending on the specific disease and the individual's immune response.
