Henry Hamilton, 2nd Earl of Clanbrassil (1647–1675) was a prominent Irish nobleman during the 17th century. He was the son of James Hamilton, 1st Earl of Clanbrassil, and his elevation to the earldom followed his father's death in 1659. His tenure as Earl was during a tumultuous period in Irish history, marked by the aftermath of the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland and the restoration of the monarchy in 1660.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Henry Hamilton was born into the influential Hamilton family, which had significant landholdings in the County Down, Ireland. His father, James Hamilton, was a loyalist to the Crown, which positioned the family among the upper echelons of society during the English Civil War and the Interregnum.

Career[edit | edit source]

Upon inheriting the earldom, Henry Hamilton, 2nd Earl of Clanbrassil, navigated the complex political landscape of Restoration Ireland. He was a member of the Irish House of Lords and took part in the political life of the country, although the specifics of his contributions are less documented than those of his father. His role during this period would have involved managing his estates and engaging in the politics of the time, which was characterized by the tension between the old English aristocracy and the new class of Cromwellian settlers.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Details of Henry Hamilton's personal life are scarce. However, it is known that he married twice. His first marriage was to Anne Carey, daughter of Henry Carey, 2nd Earl of Monmouth, with whom he had no surviving children. His second marriage was to Alice Moore, daughter of Henry Moore, 1st Earl of Drogheda, with whom he also had no surviving issue. The lack of an heir would eventually lead to the extinction of his earldom upon his death.

Death and Legacy[edit | edit source]

Henry Hamilton, 2nd Earl of Clanbrassil, died in 1675. With no direct heirs, his titles and estates passed to other family members, leading to the eventual absorption of his lands into other estates and the fading of the Clanbrassil title from prominence. His death marked the end of the Hamilton family's direct influence in the region, although the family name would continue to be associated with Irish nobility through other branches.

The legacy of Henry Hamilton, 2nd Earl of Clanbrassil, is reflective of the broader challenges faced by the Irish nobility in the 17th century, navigating the complexities of loyalty, governance, and survival in a period of significant upheaval and change.
