Henry Rinaldo Porter
Henry Rinaldo Porter (1848–1903) was an American physician and surgeon known for his service during the Battle of the Little Bighorn. He was born in New York and later moved to Minnesota where he pursued his medical career.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Henry Rinaldo Porter was born on February 14, 1848, in New York. He attended local schools and showed an early interest in medicine. Porter later enrolled at the University of Michigan where he studied medicine and graduated with a degree in 1874.
Medical Career[edit | edit source]
After completing his education, Porter moved to Minnesota and began practicing medicine. He quickly gained a reputation for his skill and dedication to his patients. In 1876, he joined the United States Army as an assistant surgeon and was assigned to the 7th Cavalry Regiment.
Battle of the Little Bighorn[edit | edit source]
Porter is best known for his role in the Battle of the Little Bighorn, which took place on June 25-26, 1876. During the battle, he provided medical care to the wounded soldiers under extremely difficult conditions. Despite the chaos and danger, Porter managed to treat many of the injured and was later commended for his bravery and dedication.
Later Life and Legacy[edit | edit source]
After his military service, Porter returned to Minnesota where he continued his medical practice. He remained active in the medical community and contributed to various medical journals. Porter passed away on March 3, 1903, leaving behind a legacy of service and dedication to the field of medicine.
