Hermann Speck von Sternburg
Hermann Speck von Sternburg (1852–1908) was a German diplomat and art collector. He served as the German Ambassador to the United States from 1903 until his death in 1908.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Hermann Speck von Sternburg was born on August 21, 1852, in Leipzig, Kingdom of Saxony. He was the son of a prominent family and received a comprehensive education in Germany. He studied law and political science at the University of Leipzig and the University of Bonn.
Diplomatic Career[edit | edit source]
Speck von Sternburg began his diplomatic career in the German Foreign Office in 1875. He held various positions in the German diplomatic service, including postings in Vienna, Belgrade, and Beijing. In 1903, he was appointed as the German Ambassador to the United States, a position he held until his death.
During his tenure in the United States, Speck von Sternburg worked to strengthen German-American relations. He was involved in various diplomatic negotiations and represented German interests in the United States.
Art Collection[edit | edit source]
In addition to his diplomatic career, Speck von Sternburg was an avid art collector. He amassed a significant collection of European and Asian art, which included paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts. Hermann Speck von Sternburg married Lillian Langham, an American, in 1900. The couple had no children. Lillian Langham was known for her social engagements and support of her husband's diplomatic efforts.

Hermann Speck von Sternburg died on August 23, 1908, in Heidelberg, Grand Duchy of Baden. He was remembered for his contributions to diplomacy and his efforts to promote cultural understanding through his art collection.
