Hermosillo is the capital and largest city of the northwestern Mexican state of Sonora. With a 2020 census population of 936,263 inhabitants, it is the 16th largest city in Mexico. It was originally named "Pitic," but was later renamed Hermosillo in honor of José María González de Hermosillo, a hero of the Mexican War of Independence. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Hermosillo grew significantly due to its strategic location and the development of agriculture, mining, and industry in the region.
