Herta Heuwer (née Pöppel; 30 June 1913 – 3 July 1999) was a German food vendor, best known for inventing the popular fast food dish currywurst.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Herta Heuwer was born in Königsberg, East Prussia (now Kaliningrad, Russia). She moved to Berlin after World War II.

Invention of Currywurst[edit | edit source]

On 4 September 1949, Herta Heuwer is credited with inventing the currywurst, a dish consisting of bratwurst (a type of German sausage) topped with a sauce made from ketchup or tomato paste blended with curry powder and other spices. She began selling her creation at a street stand in the Charlottenburg district of Berlin. The dish quickly gained popularity and became a staple of German cuisine.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Herta Heuwer's invention of currywurst has had a lasting impact on German food culture. The dish is celebrated annually on 4 September, known as "Currywurst Day" in Berlin. In 2003, a plaque was installed at the site of her original stand to commemorate her contribution to German culinary history.

Death[edit | edit source]

Herta Heuwer passed away on 3 July 1999 in Berlin.
