Heunisch Weiss
Heunisch Weiss is a white grape variety that is believed to have originated in Central Europe. It is one of the oldest known grape varieties, with references dating back to the 16th century. Despite its long history, Heunisch Weiss is not widely grown today, but it is still found in certain regions of Germany, Austria, and Hungary.
History[edit | edit source]
The exact origins of Heunisch Weiss are unclear, but it is believed to have originated in Central Europe. The grape is mentioned in historical texts dating back to the 16th century, indicating that it has been cultivated for at least 500 years. Despite its long history, Heunisch Weiss has never been widely grown and today it is considered a rare variety.
Viticulture[edit | edit source]
Heunisch Weiss is a hardy grape that can withstand harsh winter conditions. It is also resistant to many common grape diseases, making it a relatively easy variety to cultivate. However, it is susceptible to powdery mildew and botrytis cinerea, two diseases that can severely affect the quality of the grapes.
Wine production[edit | edit source]
Heunisch Weiss is used to produce white wine. The wines made from this grape are typically light in body and high in acidity. They often have flavors of green apple, pear, and citrus, with a slight mineral undertone. Due to the high acidity, Heunisch Weiss wines are often used in the production of sparkling wine.
Regions[edit | edit source]
Today, Heunisch Weiss is primarily found in Germany, Austria, and Hungary. In Germany, it is grown in the Rheinhessen and Pfalz regions. In Austria, it is found in the Burgenland and Lower Austria regions. In Hungary, it is grown in the Tokaj region.
Synonyms[edit | edit source]
Heunisch Weiss is also known by several other names, including Gouais Blanc, Weisser Heunisch, and Heunisch.
