Heuser's membrane

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Heuser's membrane (also known as Heuser's shell or inner cell mass membrane) is a structure that forms during the development of the blastocyst in mammalian embryology. It is named after the American embryologist John D. Heuser.

Etymology[edit | edit source]

The term "Heuser's membrane" is named after John D. Heuser, an American embryologist who made significant contributions to the field of embryology.

Structure and Function[edit | edit source]

Heuser's membrane is a thin, acellular structure that forms the boundary of the inner cell mass (ICM) in the blastocyst. It separates the ICM from the blastocoel, the fluid-filled cavity of the blastocyst. The membrane is composed of a layer of glycoproteins and proteoglycans, which are secreted by the cells of the ICM.

The primary function of Heuser's membrane is to protect the ICM and maintain its integrity during the early stages of embryonic development. It also plays a role in the formation of the primitive endoderm, which gives rise to the yolk sac.

Development[edit | edit source]

During the formation of the blastocyst, the cells of the morula differentiate into two distinct populations: the trophoblast cells, which form the outer layer of the blastocyst, and the ICM cells, which are enclosed within the trophoblast layer. As the blastocyst expands, a fluid-filled cavity called the blastocoel forms within the trophoblast layer. The ICM cells remain attached to the inner surface of the trophoblast layer and are separated from the blastocoel by Heuser's membrane.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

Abnormalities in the formation or function of Heuser's membrane can lead to developmental defects in the embryo. For example, failure of the membrane to form properly can result in the loss of the ICM, leading to the failure of the embryo to implant in the uterus. Additionally, defects in the membrane can disrupt the formation of the primitive endoderm and the yolk sac, which can lead to abnormalities in the development of the embryo's digestive and respiratory systems.
