Hexafluoroethane
Hexafluoroethane is a fluorocarbon compound that is a colorless, odorless gas. It is commonly used in the electronics industry because of its properties as a fire suppressant. It is also used in the production of semiconductors, in plasma etching and flat panel display production.
Chemical Properties[edit | edit source]
Hexafluoroethane is a member of the perfluorocarbons, or PFCs. It is a derivative of ethane, where all the hydrogen atoms are replaced by fluorine atoms. Its chemical formula is C2F6. It is a stable compound but can be reactive with metals.
Uses[edit | edit source]
Hexafluoroethane is used in a variety of industries for its unique properties. It is a high global warming potential gas, and it is used in the electronics industry as a versatile etchant in plasma etching processes. It is also used in the production of semiconductors and flat panel displays.
Health Effects[edit | edit source]
Exposure to hexafluoroethane can cause skin and eye irritation, and may cause dizziness or asphyxiation without warning. It can also cause frostbite. It is heavier than air and can cause suffocation by reducing oxygen available for breathing.
Environmental Impact[edit | edit source]
Hexafluoroethane is a potent greenhouse gas. It has a global warming potential 9,200 times that of CO2. Its lifetime in the atmosphere is 10,000 years.
