Hondarrabi Zuri
Hondarrabi Zuri is a white grape variety that is primarily grown in the Basque Country of Spain. It is the main grape used in the production of the region's highly acclaimed Txakoli wine.
History[edit | edit source]
The origins of Hondarrabi Zuri are not well documented, but it is believed to have been cultivated in the Basque Country for centuries. The grape is named after the town of Hondarribia, which is located in the province of Gipuzkoa.
Viticulture[edit | edit source]
Hondarrabi Zuri is a late-ripening variety that thrives in the cool, coastal climate of the Basque Country. The grape is typically harvested in late September or early October. It is highly susceptible to various vine diseases, including powdery mildew and downy mildew, which can make it challenging to cultivate.
Wine Production[edit | edit source]
Hondarrabi Zuri is used almost exclusively in the production of Txakoli, a lightly sparkling, dry white wine that is a specialty of the Basque Country. The wine is typically low in alcohol and high in acidity, with pronounced mineral and citrus flavors. In addition to being consumed locally, Txakoli is exported to various countries around the world.
Synonyms[edit | edit source]
Hondarrabi Zuri is also known by several other names, including Ondarrabi Zuri, Hondarribi Zuri, and Zuri Zerratia.
