Hostal dos Reis Católicos is a historic hotel located in the heart of Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, Spain. Originally constructed as a Royal Hospital in 1499 to give shelter to the numerous pilgrims making their way to Santiago, it stands as one of the oldest hotels in the world and is a prime example of Gothic architecture in Spain. The Hostal is situated in the Plaza do Obradoiro, directly opposite the famous Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, making it a central piece in the architectural and cultural ensemble of the city.

History[edit | edit source]

The Hostal dos Reis Católicos was commissioned by the Catholic Monarchs, Queen Isabella I of Castile and King Ferdinand II of Aragon, following their visit to Santiago de Compostela in 1486. They were moved by the plight of the pilgrims who had journeyed to visit the tomb of Saint James the Great and decided to build a hospital to care for them. The construction began in 1501 under the direction of architect Enrique Egas and was completed in 1511. Over the centuries, it has served various purposes, including a hospital for pilgrims, a poorhouse, and a seminary, before being converted into a hotel in the 20th century.

Architecture[edit | edit source]

The Hostal dos Reis Católicos is renowned for its magnificent Plateresque facade, which is adorned with Catholic iconography, including images of the Monarchs themselves. The building is structured around four courtyards, each with its own unique design and function, reflecting the Renaissance influence on Spanish architecture. The intricate stonework and elegant arches are characteristic of the Gothic style, while the later additions exhibit elements of the Renaissance. The interior of the hotel is equally impressive, with its grand staircases, vaulted ceilings, and luxurious rooms that have been meticulously restored to maintain their historical charm.

Cultural Significance[edit | edit source]

The Hostal dos Reis Católicos is not only a monument to the history of Santiago de Compostela but also a living testament to the enduring legacy of the Camino de Santiago, the pilgrimage route to the tomb of Saint James. It has hosted countless pilgrims, travelers, and dignitaries over the centuries, each adding to the rich tapestry of its history. Today, it serves as a symbol of hospitality and the enduring human spirit of exploration and devotion.

Present Day[edit | edit source]

Currently, the Hostal dos Reis Católicos operates as a luxury hotel, offering guests a unique blend of historical ambiance and modern comfort. It is part of the Paradores de Turismo de España, a chain of Spanish luxury hotels known for their historical significance and cultural value. The hotel features 137 rooms, several dining options, and state-of-the-art facilities, all while preserving the historical integrity of the building. It remains a popular destination for tourists and pilgrims alike, offering a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to stay in a piece of living history.
