Human genetic resistance to malaria is a fascinating area of study that explores how certain genetic traits can confer protection against this deadly disease. Malaria is caused by Plasmodium parasites, which are transmitted to humans through the bites of infected Anopheles mosquitoes. The disease is prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions, where it poses a significant public health challenge.

Thalassemias are inherited blood disorders characterized by the abnormal formation of hemoglobin. These conditions, including alpha-thalassemia and beta-thalassemia, can also confer some resistance to malaria. The Duffy antigen receptor for chemokines (DARC) is a protein on the surface of red blood cells that serves as a receptor for the malaria parasite Plasmodium vivax. Individuals who lack the Duffy antigen (Duffy-negative) are resistant to infection by P. vivax, as the parasite cannot enter their red blood cells.
