Hydnocarpus pentandrus is a medium-sized tree that can grow up to 20 meters in height. The leaves are simple, alternate, and oblong, with a glossy green appearance. The tree produces small, fragrant flowers that are white to pale yellow in color.
The fruit is a large, round capsule that contains numerous seeds. These seeds are the source of chaulmoogra oil, which has been used medicinally for centuries.
Distribution and Habitat[edit]
Hydnocarpus pentandrus is found in tropical regions of India, Sri Lanka, and Southeast Asia. It typically grows in lowland forests and is often found near rivers and streams.
Uses[edit]
The seeds of Hydnocarpus pentandrus are the primary source of chaulmoogra oil, which has been used in traditional medicine to treat skin conditions, particularly leprosy. The oil contains hydnocarpic acid, which is believed to have antibacterial properties.
Historical Use in Leprosy Treatment[edit]
Chaulmoogra oil was one of the first effective treatments for leprosy before the advent of modern antibiotics. The oil was administered orally, topically, and by injection. Its use was documented in various leprosy colonies, such as the one in Kalawao, Molokai.
Conservation[edit]
Due to habitat loss and overharvesting, Hydnocarpus pentandrus is considered vulnerable in some regions. Conservation efforts are focused on sustainable harvesting practices and habitat preservation.
