Hypermerimna

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Hypermerimna is an inability to shift focus away from anxiety-producing stimuli. This condition may result from damage to the attention control centers of the brain.

Causes[edit | edit source]

Hypermerimna occurs when individuals with anxiety struggle to disengage from novel stimuli. It may be linked to damage in the brain's prefrontal regions responsible for attentional control. Disruptions in attentional control are associated with difficulties in executive functions, such as working memory, observed across various conditions.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Hypermerimna may respond to treatments addressing the underlying cause of anxiety. For anxiety induced by pain, treatments may include medications like SSRIs or tricyclic antidepressants.
