Ian Cardozo

Cardozo's military career is noted for his exceptional service during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, which led to the creation of Bangladesh. As a young major, he was part of the operations in the Eastern sector. During the war, Cardozo stepped on a landmine and severely injured his leg. Faced with the possibility of gangrene due to the lack of medical facilities, he displayed extraordinary bravery by amputating his own injured leg with a khukri (a traditional Gorkha knife) to save his life. This act of self-amputation and his quick return to active service became a legendary tale of courage within the Indian Army.

After his recovery, Cardozo was fitted with a prosthetic leg and continued to serve in the Indian Army. He did not let his disability hinder his duties and went on to command an infantry battalion and a brigade. He was also appointed as the Chief of Staff of a corps in the Eastern sector, among other significant positions. His leadership and dedication to duty have been an inspiration to many soldiers and officers in the Indian Army.
