Ibotenic

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Ibotenic acid is a neurotoxin produced by the Amanita muscaria mushroom. This compound is a powerful excitatory neurotransmitter and is responsible for the psychoactive effects of the mushroom.

Chemistry[edit | edit source]

Ibotenic acid is a conformationally restricted analog of glutamate, the primary excitatory neurotransmitter in the mammalian central nervous system. It is a dicarboxylic acid and is structurally related to the amino acids glutamic acid and aspartic acid.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

Ibotenic acid acts as a potent agonist at metabotropic glutamate receptors and NMDA receptors, leading to the release of glutamate. This results in an increase in neuronal activity, which can lead to neurotoxicity and excitotoxicity.

Toxicity[edit | edit source]

The toxicity of ibotenic acid is due to its excitatory action on neurons. It can cause neurological symptoms such as hallucinations, delirium, and seizures. In severe cases, it can lead to coma or death.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for ibotenic acid poisoning is primarily supportive, with the aim of controlling symptoms and preventing complications. This may include sedation, anticonvulsant therapy, and intensive care monitoring.
