Template:Infobox film industry Independent film (often referred to as indie film) is a feature film or short film that is produced outside the major film studio system, in addition to being produced and distributed by independent entertainment companies. Independent films are sometimes distinguishable by their content and style and the way in which the filmmakers' personal artistic vision is realized. Usually, but not always, independent films are made with considerably lower budgets than major studio films.

History

The history of independent film can be traced back to the early days of cinema. In the early 20th century, filmmakers such as D.W. Griffith and Charlie Chaplin broke away from the major studios to create their own films. The United Artists studio, founded in 1919 by Chaplin, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, and D.W. Griffith, was one of the first major independent film studios.

In the 1940s and 1950s, independent films began to gain more recognition with the advent of film noir and the works of directors like Orson Welles and John Cassavetes. The 1960s and 1970s saw a significant rise in independent filmmaking with the emergence of the New Hollywood movement, which included directors such as Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, and Steven Spielberg.
