Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) is a public research university located in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States. It is a unique partnership between Indiana University and Purdue University, combining the strengths of both institutions to offer a wide range of academic programs and research opportunities.

IUPUI was established in 1969 as a result of a merger between the Indiana University Indianapolis and the Purdue University Indianapolis extension programs. The goal was to create a comprehensive urban university that could serve the educational needs of the Indianapolis metropolitan area.

Academics[edit | edit source]

IUPUI offers over 550 academic programs through its 17 schools and academic units. These include the Indiana University School of Medicine, the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law, and the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology. The university is known for its strong emphasis on health sciences, engineering, and technology.

IUPUI is classified as an R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity institution by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The university is home to numerous research centers and institutes, including the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Center for Urban Health.

The IUPUI campus is located in downtown Indianapolis, providing students with access to a vibrant urban environment. The campus features state-of-the-art facilities, including the IUPUI University Library, the Campus Center, and the Natatorium, which is one of the largest indoor swimming facilities in the world.

Athletics[edit | edit source]

IUPUI's athletic teams are known as the Jaguars. The university competes in the NCAA Division I and is a member of the Horizon League. The Jaguars participate in a variety of sports, including basketball, soccer, swimming and diving, and track and field.
