Indirect inguinal hernia

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Indirect inguinal hernia is a type of hernia that occurs when part of the intestine protrudes through the inguinal canal in the lower abdomen. This condition is more common in males than females and can occur at any age, but it is most often seen in infants and young children.

Causes[edit | edit source]

The main cause of an indirect inguinal hernia is a weakness in the abdominal wall, which can be present at birth or develop over time. This weakness allows a portion of the intestine to push through the inguinal canal, forming a hernia. Other factors that can contribute to the development of an indirect inguinal hernia include physical strain, pregnancy, obesity, and chronic cough.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

The most common symptom of an indirect inguinal hernia is a bulge in the groin or scrotum. This bulge may be more noticeable when the person is standing, and it may disappear when the person is lying down. Other symptoms can include pain or discomfort in the groin, especially when lifting heavy objects, coughing, or bending over.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Diagnosis of an indirect inguinal hernia typically involves a physical examination by a healthcare provider. The provider may ask the patient to stand and cough or strain, as this can make the hernia more noticeable. In some cases, imaging tests such as an ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI may be used to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for an indirect inguinal hernia usually involves surgery to repair the hernia and strengthen the abdominal wall. This can often be done through a minimally invasive procedure known as laparoscopic surgery. In some cases, a mesh patch may be used to reinforce the area and prevent the hernia from recurring.

Prevention[edit | edit source]

Prevention of indirect inguinal hernias primarily involves reducing risk factors such as obesity and chronic cough. Regular exercise can help strengthen the abdominal muscles and reduce the risk of hernias. It's also important to use proper lifting techniques to avoid straining the abdominal muscles.
