Indo-Guyanese are the descendants of indentured laborers from India who were brought to Guyana during the colonial period. They form one of the largest ethnic groups in the country and have significantly influenced its culture, economy, and politics.

The arrival of Indo-Guyanese dates back to the mid-19th century when the British colonial government sought laborers to work on the sugar plantations after the abolition of slavery. The first group of Indian indentured laborers arrived in Guyana on May 5, 1838, aboard the ships Whitby and Hesperus. Over the next 80 years, more than 238,000 Indians were brought to Guyana under the indenture system.

Indo-Guyanese culture is a blend of Indian traditions and local influences. They have preserved many aspects of their Indian heritage, including language, religion, cuisine, and festivals. The main languages spoken by Indo-Guyanese include English, Hindi, and Bhojpuri.

The majority of Indo-Guyanese practice Hinduism, followed by Islam and Christianity. Hindu festivals such as Diwali and Holi are widely celebrated, as are Islamic festivals like Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.

Indo-Guyanese cuisine is characterized by its use of spices and includes dishes such as roti, curry, and dal. Popular snacks include samosa and pakora.

Indo-Guyanese have played a significant role in the economic development of Guyana. They are involved in various sectors, including agriculture, business, and trade. Many Indo-Guyanese are rice farmers, contributing to Guyana's status as a major rice exporter.

Indo-Guyanese have been active in Guyanese politics since the early 20th century. They have been represented in various political parties and have held significant positions in the government. The People's Progressive Party (PPP), founded by Cheddi Jagan, has been particularly influential among Indo-Guyanese.
